Turner Upholstery was founded in 1935 by Byron Turner who
operated the business as an auto trim shop until 1941. At
that time, America had entered World War II so Byron made a
decision to reconfigure his fabric shop to contribute to the
war effort. Byron made adjustments in his shop so that he
could produce pup tents to be used by American soldiers
serving in the war. So, for the next several years, Turner’s
full operation for 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, was
dedicated to making tents.
After the war ended, Byron returned to operating as an auto
trim shop. Byron’s son, Warren, had become active in the
business by this time so when Bryon decided to retire in
1964, he turned the business over to Warren. Warren Turner
was instrumental in expanding their product lines to include
installation of sunroofs and convertible tops, and to also
include custom upholstery design and fabrication for boats
and aircraft. In 1977, he moved the business to its present
location in downtown Overland Park, Kansas. Warren sold Turner
Custom Upholstery to his daughter, Cassandra, and her
husband in 1992. Even though Cassandra took over full
operation of Turner Custom Upholstery, Warren continued to
work as a part time staff member. His love and knowledge of
the upholstery business, and friendly nature with customers,
made him a valuable employee to keep around!
In 2005, after Cassandra Turner made a decision to sell the
company, Gary Inselman took over as the new owner. Gary was
excited about becoming involved in a new industry after
having worked as a sales executive in the paper industry for
35 years. His attention to customer service ensures that
clients will be pleased with their custom upholstery or
aftermarket product and proud they selected the craftsmen at
Turner Custom Upholstery.
